Kara Gendron, manager of the Bistro at White Mountains Community College, plans out and then preps the items that will appear on her lunch menu Wednesday. Thanks to a unique grant, the Bistro for the past two years has offered free lunches to all enrolled WMCC students while continuing to serve non-students, too.
The free meals program cost about $115,000 for the 2021-22 school year, Lloyd said. Federal pandemic aid and foundation grants, including one from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, covered the cost last year and this year.

The college is still collecting data on how the free meals have influenced the number of courses students take and the number of students completing programs. But in conversations with students and faculty, Lloyd said the program seems to be working well enough for the college to make free meals a priority in the budget.
The chair of the African Union, Senegal's President Macky Sall, will meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Friday as the war in Ukraine exacerbates food insecurity on the continent, a spokesperson for the AU confirmed to POLITICO.
The visit has been planned "amid efforts from the presidency to contribute to deescalation amid the war in Ukraine, and to free stocks of cereals and fertilizers, the blockade of which particularly impacts African countries," according to a statement to the Senegalese press agency.
Sall joined Wednesday's European Council summit discussion on food security, telling EU leaders via video that the food supply shortage in Africa was "very serious and alarming." Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February, is blocking exports from the country's Black Sea ports. Sall also echoed statements from French President Emmanuel Macron, who said Africa and Europe must "not fall into the trap" and resist Russia's narrative, which blames the shortage on Western sanctions. The narrative "is out there" in Africa, Sall told his European counterparts Wednesday.
Nearly 70 Cambodian civil society organizations have called for the immediate release of a prominent labor union leader arrested three days ago for allegedly violating bail conditions from a prior arrest.
Authorities arrested Chhim Sithar, a leader of the Labor Rights Supported Union of Khmer Employees of the NagaWorld casino complex, at Phnom Penh International Airport on Saturday, for violating bail conditions that allegedly prohibited her from traveling overseas.
Thousands of NagaWorld employees walked off their jobs in mid-December 2021, demanding higher wages and the reinstatement of eight jailed union leaders and nearly 370 others they said were unjustly fired from the casino, which is owned by Malaysian billionaire Tan Sri Chen Lip Keong.
ETUC condemns the arrest of leaders of our Turkish affiliate DISK today. We demand the immediate release of Arzu Cerkezoglu and Adnan Serdaroglu and other arrested trade union leaders, and without charge.
Some union leaders met at the headquarters of the Turkish trade union DİSK this morning to commemorate May Day. The police surrounded the building and arrested 20 leaders including General Secretary Arzu Çerkezoğlu and President Adnan Serdaroğlu using violence.
"I condemn the arrests" said ETUC General Secretary Luca Visentini "and demand their immediate release and without any charges. Democratic rights have to be respected in Turkey, and the harassment of trade unions has to stop."
The president of an employees union in Chattanooga who helped convince former President Trump to get the Tennessee Valley Authority to reverse its outsourcing of information technology jobs last year has been elected to the No. 2 position in the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.
Gay Henson, a health physicist at the Tennessee Valley Authority who is president of the Engineering Association/IFPTE Local 193, was recently elected as secretary-treasurer of the International union during the IFPTE annual convention. Henson, who joined the union in 1985 when she began her career and has served in union leadership posts since 2005, will remain as president of the IFPTE Local through February, in addition to her new job in Washington D.C.
"Having an up-from-the-ranks leader like Gay Henson, who has organized and rallied workers in the deep South and proven that she can take on the big bosses and win, adds great strength to the leadership team," said Paul Shearon, who is retiring as IFPTE president.
The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, sometimes referred to as the home of "the geeks of the labor movement," counts engineers at Boeing and rocket scientists at NASA among its members. It is also one of the largest unions representing workers at the Tennessee Valley Authority.
IFPTE represents about 90,00 employees in public and pivate-sector jobs and in recent years, hundreds of workers employed at think-tanks and non-profits such as the Economic Policy Institute, The Center for American Progress, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Animal Legal Defense Fund, have also joined the engineers union.
"A common perception is that highly educated workers at non-profits, government agencies and tech companies have it easier than workers in industries and services where unions have a long history," Biggs said. "The fact is, workers with advanced degrees and those in offices, hearing rooms and labs have issues and need representation. IFPTE is here for them."

The attacks on the BKDP and its member unions are the latest in a long series of repressive acts. In March, the ILO Committee on Freedom of Association heavily criticised the government over its continued failure to implement key recommendations of a 2004 ILO Commission of Inquiry.
A number of the union representatives who have provided testimony to the ILO on Belarus in recent years are amongst those detained. The ITUC is informing the ILO of these latest outrageous developments.
In December 2015, President Han Sang-gyun of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions was imprisoned for defending trade union rights and fighting back against corporate corruption and the repressive government of former President Park Geun-hye of South Korea. This week, Han finally won his freedom.
Starting as a student activist, Han later helped organize a union at the auto manufacturing plant where he worked. In 2008, he was elected chair of his union. His efforts to fight layoffs at his company led to a 77-day occupation of the plant for which Han was sent to prison for three years. After his release, he continued to fight for working people with a 171-day sit-in near the plant. After the conclusion of the sit-in, hundreds of jobs were saved.
Union activists have been at the forefront of the fight for social justice in South Korea. Workers have mobilized against anti-worker labor legislation and government corruption in a series of massive peaceful demonstrations. President Park frequently responded to dissent with police brutality, mass arrests and harsh jail sentences targeted at leaders, including President Han, who bravely continued to organize. The Korean labor movement and civil society eventually forced the ouster of President Park, who later was charged with bribery, abuse of power and other crimes....
No mention was made of the fact that I was Jewish, though my last name made that fact unmistakable. I later learned that that when members of the press questioned the Nazi leader about my religious background, he reportedly said that his primary concern was with successfully exercising his First Amendment rights, not the personal beliefs of his lawyers.
The ranking test for adventures to move on to the next level can be taken at any time. For that purpose, a proctor from every division is always present. But since proctors are sometimes relied upon in times of need, they are mostly hired from among A-rank adventurers retired from service. Should an adventurer pass, they become E-rank and from there, are allowed to challenge higher ranks, usually in increments. The proctors have discretion to allow adventurers to skip however many increments and challenge the B-rank test if they feel the adventurer is capable enough. Branch leaders are able to use their privileges to automatically assign B-rank privileges to anyone in special cases without going through the rank tests. Tests for ranks B+ and above can only be taken at headquarters.
NEW YORK -- Michael Weiner, the plain-speaking, ever-positive labor lawyer who took over as head of the powerful baseball players' union four years ago and smoothed its perennially contentious relationship with management, died Thursday, 15 months after announcing he had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. He was 51.
As Weiner's health deteriorated this summer, a succession plan was put in place. Former big league All-Star Tony Clark took over Thursday as acting executive director and is to be approved as Weiner's successor when the union's board meets from Dec. 2-5 at La Jolla, Calif.
"Words cannot describe the love and affection that the players have for Michael, nor can they describe the level of sadness we feel today," Clark said in a statement. "Not only has the game lost one of its most important and influential leaders in this generation, all involved in the game have lost a true friend."
"Our strong professional relationship was built on a foundation of respect and a shared commitment to finding fair solutions for our industry. I appreciated Michael's tireless, thoughtful leadership of the players and his pivotal role in the prosperous state of baseball today," Selig said in a statement. "Michael was a courageous human being, and the final year of his remarkable life inspired so many people in our profession." 2ff7e9595c
